Uzbekistan
π World Cup Story
Uzbekistan is the most populous of the Central Asian nations (36 million people) and has long had a vibrant football culture β they've produced dozens of players who have played in Russia, South Korea, and European leagues. But as part of the Soviet Union until 1991, they competed under the USSR banner and have had to build a footballing identity from scratch. They've been regular AFC Asian Cup participants since 1994, reaching the quarterfinals multiple times. Their youth development has produced the best generation in Uzbek history: Eldor Shomurodov (Roma), who has played in Serie A, is their star. The expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams gave a nation with serious footballing quality the chance they always deserved. Their debut in 2026 will be a moment of enormous national pride.
