Germany/West Germany is the second-most successful World Cup nation with four titles (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014) and four runner-up finishes. They have never missed a World Cup. West Germany's 1954 "Miracle of Bern" — beating the dominant Hungarian "Golden Team" in the final after losing 8-3 to them in the group stage — is considered the greatest upset in final history. The 2014 triumph in Brazil was complete with the 7-1 demolition of hosts Brazil — the Mineirazo — in the semifinal, and a 1-0 extra-time winner over Argentina in the final. But since then: group-stage exit in 2018 (as defending champions — the biggest shock in modern WC history), group-stage exit in 2022. Euro 2024 quarterfinal exit on home soil. A nation of football demands much more from this young squad.
