Ecuador
🌍 World Cup Story
Ecuador have been the biggest improvers in South American football in the 21st century. Their first World Cup was 2002, and they immediately advanced from the group stage — a debut which announced their arrival. In 2006 they repeated that feat, reaching the last 16. They hosted Copa América in 1993 and have punched above their weight ever since. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar began with them as the opening game opponents — losing 2-0 to the hosts. They exited in the group stage, but their qualifying campaign across CONMEBOL (the toughest route in world football) was impressive. Moisés Caicedo, playing at Chelsea, is one of the world's best defensive midfielders. Ecuador's compact, athletic style and South American grit make them always dangerous.
📌 2026 Context
A CONMEBOL force — qualified four times since 2002, reaching the round of 16 on their debut, and powered by one of Europe's best midfielders.
