Brazil are the most successful World Cup nation in history — the only country to have appeared at all 22 editions, and five-time champions (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002). The 1970 side, featuring Pelé, is widely considered the greatest international team ever assembled. The 1982 team — Zico, Socrates, Falcao — is perhaps the most beloved never to win it. The 1994 triumph ended a 24-year drought. In 2002, Ronaldo recovered from a mysterious illness to top-score and fire Brazil to their fifth title. But since 2002, a fifth star has felt distant: quarter-final exits in 2006 and 2010, and the humiliation of 7-1 at home to Germany in 2014 — the Mineirazo — remains the most shocking result in Brazilian football history.
